What is a Backflow Preventer and Why Is It Required?
A backflow preventer valve is an addition to your outflow sewer pipe that makes sure that drainage only flows one way. In the case of a reverse flow of water, a backflow prevention device helps to prevent pollution being forced into your home and causing contamination.
A backflow preventer is mandated in Toronto by the Water Supply Bylaw that describes which valve may be best for you.
What Triggers Backflow?
There are several events that trigger backflow, and two of the more common ones are:

Backflow Preventer Installation
Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA) – a DCVA is useful when the risk of contamination is low risk. We install this when the water pressure is constant and there is a minimal chance of backflow.
Reduce Pressure Principle (RP) Backflow Preventer – an RP preventer is considered unequaled but is better suited for higher risk situations. While better than a DCVA, it is more expensive.
Annual Backflow Valve Testing
It is required by the City of Toronto that backflow preventer valves be tested annually. The Water Supply Bylaw states that buildings have backflow prevention testing done once a year and also within 3 days of repairs or changes made to the valve.
Backflow test reports must be sent in to the City of Toronto, but that can be done online. Contact AquaRescue to have a Cross Connection Control Specialist come to your home to complete the test.
.

Commercial Backflow Preventer
A commercial backflow preventer is important for a surrounding community especially with cross connections or hazardous materials in businesses. Commercial buildings, like restaurants, hospitals, and car washes, are required to have a backflow preventer to assist in protecting public health.
